Do you have tooth pain and are wondering if you should see a dentist? Tooth pain occurs as a result of the nerves in your teeth responding to stimuli then sending out a warning to you that something is not right through a sensation that can either be mild or severe. If you want to learn more about toothaches and what causes them, we asked a dentist to provide a list of the top 10 reasons we have tooth pain.

Top 10 causes of tooth pain

1. Tooth decay

According to dentists, tooth decay is the leading cause of toothaches. Even though tooth decay is caused by poor oral hygiene, the decay in the tooth has to be significant in order to reach the inner tooth, where the dentin and nerves reside. If the dentin is damaged as a result of tooth decay, the tooth will become very sensitive, leading to a lot of pain.

2. Abscess in the tooth

This is when a pocket of pus forms around the root of a tooth that has been infected. If you notice a pimple-like bump on your gums, swelling, pain when you chew or redness, you should see a dentist immediately because the condition will get worse and spread to other teeth if you do not treat it.

3. Gum disease

Gum disease leads to the inflammation of the gums and, if left untreated, it can lead to your teeth and gums getting damaged which will leave you in a lot of pain.

4. Fractured or broken tooth

This can occur while you are biting down on food, during an accident or while playing sports. The initial pain after fracturing or breaking a tooth should be enough to make you go to the dentist immediately. But, even if you do not feel a lot of pain, you should see your dentist to avoid making the condition worse.

5. Sensitivity

This is usually caused by nerve or dentin damage. Your tooth will hurt when you eat or drink anything that is hot or cold. The pain can be alleviated using toothpaste for sensitive teeth but if it persists, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist.

6. Loose fillings

If you have a dental filling and it comes loose, you will be in a lot of pain because the hole that the filling was covering is now exposed, which will make it very sensitive and lead to pain. You can fix this temporarily by cementing the filling in place with dental cement until you get a chance to see your dentist.

7. Grinding your teeth

Teeth grinding wears down your teeth and can lead to a crack or chipped tooth. If you grind your teeth, you can avoid damaging your teeth by asking your dentist to make a mouthguard you can use while you sleep or by buying one at a sporting goods store.

8. Poor oral hygiene

Practicing poor oral hygiene is the easiest way to get a cavity or gum disease. You can strengthen your teeth and prevent oral diseases by brushing at least two times a day, flossing regularly, and visiting your dentist at least twice a year.

9. Misaligned teeth

If your teeth are misaligned, they will press against each other, which will eventually result in pain. If you have misaligned teeth, you can get the problem fixed by visiting an orthodontist.

10. Enamel erosion

The enamel protecting your teeth is very strong but it can be worn down by acids from the food that you eat and the bacteria in your mouth. If your enamel is worn, you are at risk of tooth decay, which will lead to a lot of pain and require a visit to the dentist.

The bottom line

Tooth pain can be a nuisance, but the problem can also be treated with a visit to see your dentist. You can also avoid the pain by practicing good oral hygiene, so ask your dentist for some oral hygiene tips when you go for your next appointment.Request an appointment here: https://www.mariettaroswelldentist.com or call Marietta Roswell Dental Care at (770) 993-2657 for an appointment in our Roswell office.
