Lumineers® are veneers that require less preparation than conventional veneers. Veneers are tooth-shaped coverings that are cemented to the front part of teeth. Veneers are designed to cover up the imperfections on teeth they are placed on, drastically improving their appearance.

How a dentist improves your smile with Lumineers®

Thanks to veneers, man people can now have the smile they have always dreamed of. The main drawback associated with veneers is the permanent alterations that are done to the teeth being treated. A portion of the enamel is removed from the front of the teeth to make space for the restoration. This prevents the restoration from making the patient’s teeth appear abnormally large.Lumineers do not require shaving off significant portions of enamel from the patient’s teeth. Unlike veneers that are typically made out of porcelain or composite resin, Lumineers are made from super-thin laminates.

The Lumineers process

Transforming your smile with Lumineers usually requires two trips to the dentist. During the first visit, an impression of the patient’s mouth is taken and sent to a lab where Lumineers are made. There is no need for temporary veneers since enamel is not removed from the patient’s teeth. It takes anywhere between two to four weeks for the customized shells to get back to the dentist.During the second visit, the dentist will cement the Lumineers on the teeth being treated, instantly transforming the patient’s smile. Some of the key differences between Lumineers and veneers include:

  • More translucent: Lumineers are thinner than conventional veneers, which makes them more translucent. The restorations can be used to cover up mild to moderate discoloration, but people with severe discoloration might be better off with thicker conventional veneers since they are better at covering up stains
  • No permanent alterations: With Lumineers, there is no need to remove enamel from the patient’s teeth, so they are free to explore other options in the future if desired
  • Easy to remove: Unlike traditional veneers, Lumineers can be removed without causing significant damage to the patient’s teeth
  • Slightly less durable: Lumineers are not as thick as conventional veneers, which makes them slightly less durable. Still, patients can expect their Lumineers to last over 10 years with good oral hygiene
