You may have heard about same day crowns, but do you understand how the process works? There are also benefits with this method that you cannot get with the traditional option. Like traditional crowns, CEREC® can restore your smile and help you to once again have the full function of your mouth. If you are looking for a faster way to correct your teeth, talk to your dentist and see if placing a crown in a single appointment is an option for you.

Issues that lead to the need for same day crowns

Crowns are useful in multiple situations. Some people may choose to get a crown to cover a stained tooth or a tooth that is misshapen or misaligned. However, most patients will ask the dentist about crowns to cover and protect a damaged tooth. Crowns fit over the entire tooth and look much like a natural tooth in size, shape, and color. The crown will stabilize the tooth and prevent further damage.Often, an accident or injury will cause the damage that leads a person to seek a crown. This can happen by suffering a hard blow to the face from an object or in a fall. Other people may bite into a hard food or object. Poor oral hygiene can also weaken teeth, leading to fractures, cracks, or chips.

Creating the crown

Once the dentist decides that same day crowns are the right treatment, a hygienist will take X-rays. 3D pictures of the mouth will also be taken. This information goes into a computer, where a program creates a digital model. Next, a milling unit receives the model and begins to make the crown out of a ceramic block.

Prep work

Before the patient can receive the same day crown, the dentist must prepare the tooth. The dentist will begin by numbing the patient’s mouth so that the person is comfortable. Next, the dentist will reshape it so that the crown will fit properly. The dentist will also match the color shade of the crown to that of the surrounding natural teeth.

Placing the crown

During this same appointment, the crown will be ready for placement. The dentist will secure it over the affected tooth with some dental cement. To help it harden quickly, the dentist will use light to cure it. The dentist will then polish the crown and check to make sure the patient is comfortable.

Follow-up work

A week or two after getting the same day crown, the patient will visit the dentist again. This may be a phone conversation, though some dentists prefer to see the patient in person. The dentist will make sure the crown is feeling good and not irritating the mouth. The patient will report whether they are accustomed to the crown. This is a good opportunity for the dentist to reiterate which foods to avoid in order to preserve the crown.

Treatment for your smile, in less time

If you want a faster, more convenient way to repair your teeth, same day crowns could be the right option. Your dentist can explain more about the process. You can also find out whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. With CEREC crowns, you can once again smile without feeling embarrassed. Are you considering getting same day crowns in the Roswell area?
